Abstract | This dissertation is a qualitative study of the benefits of a student-initiated apartment theme-housing program at a small private university in the southern United States. This study used in-depth interviews to determine what benefits existed from participation in the theme-housing program, and to determine if the program was beneficial to non-theme house residents. This study employed a grounded theory methodology and used Astin's Input-Environment-Output model as a conceptual framework. The sample consisted of 26 students--13 from the theme-housing program and 13 who did not participate in the program. It was determined that the primary benefits of the theme-housing program are increased interaction with faculty when the house is academically based and generally increased interaction with neighbors across house types. Other benefits of the program include student involvement and community building opportunities as well as increased opportunities to learn conflict resolution and problem-solving skills.
