AbstractThe purpose of this study was to examine the experiences and perceptions of two first year teachers relating to the concept of preparing the classroom environment for learning. Two female first year teachers of young children participated in the study. One taught preschool and the other taught fourth grade, both in public school settings in the southeast United States. Their experiences in creating a classroom environment for the first time were examined in order to understand the perceptions that first year teachers have about designing effective classroom environments. Data for this qualitative study were collected from a questionnaire, interviews, observations, weekly teacher feedback, videotapes, photographs, and the researcher's journal. Four themes emerged from the data analysis: (a) the focus of the teacher, (b) classroom arrangement, (c) classroom organization, and (d) school culture. Results of the study indicated that the classroom environments reflected the focus of the teachers. Although both teachers looked forward to setting up their classrooms, one was more concerned about the environmental standards imposed by her state, and the other focused on creating a literacy environment. These first year teachers' perceptions about creating a classroom environment mostly centered on the physical environment, with one teacher particularly focusing on the social and emotional elements of the classroom environment. School culture also had a strong effect on the classroom environments of these novice teachers. One teacher received more support from her school environment that provided a culture with a positive attitude, while the other did not find such support from her school environment, and that influenced her perception of the school culture. First year teachers need to be aware of all of the elements, both physical and emotional, that make an environment effective for teaching and learning, as well as to develop an understanding of their school cultures.
