Abstract | A presidential transition has a major impact on the life of an institution. Hundreds of presidential transitions take place annually, and when they are not amicable and carefully orchestrated, they can scar both the institution and the president. This book is designed to provide assistance to presidents, trustees, faculty, and other important stakeholder groups, helping them avoid the pitfalls of poorly managed transitions. After the Foreword (Stephen Joel Trachtenberg) and Preface, this book is organized into the following chapters: (1) The Journey Begins; (2) Creating a Transition Map [Includes the following essays: My Transition to a Presidency (Mohammad H. Qayoumi); How Long Can I Last? (John V. Lombardi); and The BSU Budget Surprise (Mickey L. Burnim)]; (3) New Presidents Will Go Only as Far as Their Relationships Take Them [Includes the following essays: Going on the Road to Connect with Trustees (Donald R. Eastman III); Building and Working with a Board of Trustees (Rita Bornstein); and The First Faculty Conflict (Timothy R. Lannon)]; (4) Avoiding Mishaps and Self-Inflicted Wounds [Includes the following essays: Coping with Financial Challenges while Retaining the Board's Support (R. Kirby Godsey); When Confidentiality Trumps Consultation (Susan Resneck Pierce); and Blogs--Dealing with the New PR Sting (Christopher Simpson and Hailey Proctor)]; (5) Managing the Twilight--When a President Leaves [Includes the following essay: A Second Chance (Nicholas S. Rashford)]; (6) Building a Bridge to the Future [Includes the following essays: Coming through Successfully--Even When You're Least Prepared (John Cochran); and "Pitching My Tent" (Robert Vogel)]; and (7) Lessons Learned. The following are appended: (1) Transition Map Checklist; (2) Annotated Bibliography; and (3) Individuals Interviewed. This book contains an index. (Individual chapters contain endnotes.) (ERIC). |
