AbstractThe fall 2004 and spring 2005 issues of Journal of Music Teacher Education, the online journal of MENC's Society for Music Teacher Education, in one print edition, includes a special issue on the future of music education, with articles about certification practices, second-career music teachers, music education philosophy and research for future teachers, music education students' experiences with special learners, and more. The Fall 2004 Table of Contents, (Volume 14, Number 1) is presented as follows: (1) From the Chair, "Past Accomplishments, Present Issues, and Future Directions" (David Teachout); (2) Commentary, "Life in Transition" (William E. Frederickson); (3) "A Tribute to a Founder of the Society for Music Teacher Education: George N. Heller" (Edward, P. Asmus); (4) "An Investigation of Second-Career Music Teaching" (Margaret H. Berg); (5) "The problem of Music Education Philosophy for Undergraduates" (Paul Broomhead); (6) "Where Do We Begin with Inquiry-Based Degree Programs?" (Suzanne L. Burton); (7) "Raising the Standards: Music Teacher Education in a Performance-Based World" (Don P. Ester); and (8) "Comparing Prospective Freshmen and Preservice Music Education Majors?
