Abstract | CapBIT 97, Capacity Building for Information Technologies in Education in Developing Countries, from which this publication derives, was an invited IFIP working conference sponsored by Working Groups in secondary (WG 3.1), elementary (WG 3.5), and vocational and professional (WG 3.4) education under the auspices of IFIP Technical Committee for Education (TC3). This book reflects the uniqueness of the CapBIT conference in a number of ways. The core of the book is the collection of invited papers that were delivered at the conference--papers which were invited to reflect the range of topics and experiences in the field. The papers provide insight into the individual and collective problems facing IT use in education. To that core are added two further features. First, synopses of four workshops, devoted to specific capacity building applications and concerns of the delegates, demonstrate the range of possibilities available. Second, there are reports from the discussion groups held during the conference. The book is divided into nine main sections: (1) National Perspectives; (2) Building Skills in the National Context; (3) Targeted Projects; (4) Classroom-Based Initiatives; (5) Research for IT-Based Education; (6) Resource Acquisition, Allocation and Utilization; (7) A Curriculum for the Future; (8) Workshop Presentations; and (9) Discussion Group Recommendations. An alphabetical list of participants, index of contributors, and keyword index are also provided. (AEF) |
