AbstractThe Urban Systemic Initiatives (USI) program is an effort sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) that targets large urban school systems with the goal of sustainable implementation of high-quality, standards-based teaching for the purpose of attaining system-wide increases in students' learning of challenging mathematics and science. The Milwaukee Public Schools joined USI in 1996 with Milwaukee Urban Systemic Initiative (MUSI). The purpose of this report is to provide formative data on MUSI. A survey was given to all teachers who taught mathematics and science in First Wave MUSI schools, in fall 1996. A follow-up survey was then given at the end of two years in spring 1998. Presented are the results from the initial and follow-up surveys that were given to the First Wave MUSI schools. Appendices contain a list of the First Wave Schools and the survey instruments used for elementary mathematics and science; middle and high school mathematics; and middle and high school science.
