Abstract | Suggesting that the general bias among librarians against fantasy literature can be overcome, this book hopes to convey the magic found in fantasy literature to children and adolescents through their teachers and librarians. It provides some basic definitions of fantasy; presents commentary on issues that have caused some to find fantasy objectionable; discusses ways fantasy uses the basic elements of literature; presents practical applications for using fantasy in the classroom; and presents ready-to-use booktalks and program and display ideas. Chapters in the book are (1) Introducing Fantasy; (2) Appreciating Fantasy; (3) Discovering Fantasy; (4) Connecting Fantasy; and (5) Programming Fantasy. An appendix contains information on 23 Internet sites, brief biographies of 16 authors, and an annotated list of 68 picture books and approximately 500 chapter books. (RS) |
