AbstractThis essay, one in a series about the priorities of the professoriate, seeks to explore variations on standard tenure practices that might be advantageous to the interests of both faculty and the institutions by proposing three modifications to traditional policies. The first, tenure by objectives, involves reconfiguration of the probationary period, stop-the-clock leaves, fixed membership of tenure candidates' review committees throughout the probationary period, and tenure contracts negotiated around the locus of the tenure commitment. The second involves post-tenure reviews that focus more on departments than on individual performance; some involve reviews of all faculty at set intervals, others involve selective reviews triggered by performance-related concerns. The third alternative proposal involves codification of academic freedom without tenure--offered, in part, as a response to the growing reliance on nontenure-track and part-time appointments. In accepting the reality that higher education can no longer do business as usual, it is the hope of the author of this paper to stimulate constructive conversations about faculty employment arrangements and to expand the range of policy options available. A draft of an Academic Freedom Policy and Procedures statement is appended. (Contains 57 references.) (CH)
