| Abstract | This paper presents eight suggestions for improving the chances for success of collaborative writing projects among scholars. Based on personal experience and semi-structured interviews with colleagues, eight "clues" for collaboration were identified: (1) a written pre-collaborative agreement; (2) an unambiguous work plan; (3) equal motivation on the part of collaborators; (4) the need for a partnership to have more going for it than collective need; (5) the need for collaborators to quarrel and discuss conflicts; (6) a critical reader to offer suggestions; (7) the need for close personal contact to prevent procrastination; and (8) the possibility of writing collaboratively with a spouse or significant other.
