Abstract | This book is about teacher-leaders who work in schools, universities, district and county offices, and other educational institutions and who serve as consultants, mentors, principals, project leaders, and teacher educators. The professional model of teaching emphasizes the role of teachers as informed, responsible decision makers, grounded in the intellectual knowledge of teaching, who interact with colleagues ethically and respectfully. The book is divided into two parts, "The Road to Professionalism" and "Means To Actualize Professional Roles." Part 1 contains an introduction by Johanna K. Lemlech, and the following chapters: (1) "Leadership and Professionalism" (Johanna K. Lemlech); (2) "Issues Affecting Leadership and Professionalism" (Johanna K. Lemlech); (3) "Putting It Together: A Constructivist Perspective on School Leadership" (Peter Hodges); and (4) "Taking the Lead from Teachers: Seeking a New Model of Staff Development" (Mitzi Lewison). Part 2 contains the following chapters: (5) "Teacher Research" (Laurie MacGillivray); (6) "The Professional Teacher in a School-University Partnership" (Hillary S. Hertzog); (7) "The Staff Development Course Leader: A New Professional Role for the Classroom Teacher" (Scott M. Mandel); and (8) "Building New Professional Roles" (Johanna K. Lemlech). An appendix contains an excerpt from a case study of a secondary English-as-a-Second Language teacher, "Say Yes to Teacher Innovation and Leadership: A Case Study of a Successful ESL Teacher-Leader." (Jane S. Hancock). Each chapter contains a bibliography. (ND) |
