Abstract | This book provides the schedules, scales, and procedures for systematic assessment of child care environments. It also suggests the way to develop a scale oriented to the physical environment. The introduction notes that of various scales available for describing and evaluating different aspects of child care programs and centers, many scales are developed without adequate study of their reliability and validity. A more comprehensive effort is currently underway to revise and extend these scales in order to develop an integrated set of validated scales. Following a sample letter of introduction and consent form, the scales are divided into the following categories: (1) center, children, and teacher profiles; (2) early childhood teacher style and dimensions of education rating scales; (3) early childhood physical environment scales; (4) playground and neighborhood observation behavior maps; and (5) the Environment/Behavior Observation Schedule for Early Childhood Environments. Contains 65 references. (AP) |
