Abstract | This guide is designed for adult volunteer leaders, camp counselors, and teachers who want to explore the subject of waste disposal and management with youth. An introduction provides background on waste disposal problems and disposal options including reducing, reusing, recycling, and composting. Seven discussion questions are intended to stimulate interest before conducting activities. Five activities engage students in: (1) making recycled paper; (2) comparing the rate at which different wastes decompose; (3) exploring items in a trash bag that could be recycled; (4) monitoring individual waste production; and (5) playing a game that reviews what was learned in previous activities. Each activity includes an introduction, student objectives, materials needed, activity procedure, follow-up questions, and reproducible student worksheets. A 26-word glossary and project record sheet are provided. (LZ) |
