Abstract | This document consists of lesson plans for teaching junior high school students about the U.S. Constitution. Lessons are derived from teaching methods that instructors have found useful and appropriate for the actual condition of the ordinary classroom, and account for the characteristics and needs of the early adolescent. The document includes a preface, a foreword to the teacher, acknowledgments, and a rationale for the lessons. Chapters include: (1) "Fundamental Concepts"; (2) "Roots of the Constitution"; (3) "Writing and Ratifying the Constitution"; (4) "Constitutional Change"; (5) "Federalism"; (6) "Separation of Powers"; (7) "Limited Government"; and (8) "Culminating Activity." Chapter subheadings address basic concepts, such as federalism and checks and balances, and go on to illustrate them with case precedents, other legal problems, and role playing and other learning activities.
