Abstract | This report summarizes findings of the National Longitudinal Transition Study of Special Education Students (NLTS) in four areas: (1) the multiple dimensions of diversity and the characteristics of young people with disabilities; (2) secondary school programs, performance, and completion; (3) postschool outcomes; and (4) life profiles which provide a construct of independence. An overview of the NLTS notes the wide range of characteristics, experiences, and outcomes considered in the study which is based on parent/student telephone interviews, analysis of secondary school records, and a student school program survey. Under each of these areas, major findings are first highlighted, then each finding is explained in a one-page brief, and, finally, supporting graphs and tables provide detailed documentation. Sample findings from each of the four areas include: the majority of secondary school students with disabilities had cognitive learning problems; academic coursework dominated students' programs; there were strong gains in employment over time, so that 57 percent were competitively employed 3 to 5 years out of school; and gains in independence over time were not equally distributed across disability categories.
