Abstract | This learning activity package is designed to help women prepare for the environment they may find while working in a trade. After completing this package, women should have a realistic idea about how well prepared they are to deal with job conditions that tend to be a problem for tradeswomen. Five units address the following topics: (1) understanding male co-workers; (2) stereotypes of women in the trades; (3) the climate of the workplace; (4) work force readiness; and (5) how to handle harassment. The exercises in each unit are designed to be done individually and then discussed with others. Most of the exercises involve value judgments, so opportunity should be provided for discussion of feelings with someone who understands them. Each unit contains some or all of these components: objectives, considerations to think about while the learner completes the unit, informational material, activity or activities, and considerations to think about when the learner completes the unit. Appendixes contain the following: additional activities about stereotyping, reasons for not hiring women and responses, annotated listing of five additional resources, and material on what sexual harassment is and what can be done.
