AbstractA comparison study examined financial data and full-time student enrollment statistics (1987-88) from 10 Ontario universities with comparable U.S. schools (in eight Great Lake Region states, and California, Texas, and Florida) in order to establish the competitiveness of Ontario's university system in the North American context. Analysis revealed the following: (1) public universities in the 11 U.S. states received 33% more revenue per full-time student (adding private schools, 49% more) than comparable Ontario universities; (2) tuition revenues were 76% higher in the United States; (3) state/provincial appropriations averaged 19% more in the United States; and (4) only Texas and Ohio had levels of funding, for both private and public institutions, approximating Ontario's. In addition, the study matched individual U.S. institutions of similar size and program mix to two Ontario universities (University of Toronto, Queen's University). Analysis revealed that only one (Ohio State) had funding as low as Toronto's, all other U.S. schools were funded at considerably higher levels. Average revenue for nine U.S. public universities was 40% greater than for Queen's University, and six private U.S. universities averaged 179% more than Queen's University. The document includes tables of statistics and an appendix describing data sources. (GLR)
