Abstract | This curriculum guide for a Spanish and English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) literacy unit for adult students consists of an introductory section, a diagnostic test and a course of instruction, and appended materials. The introduction outlines the institution's part-time personnel policies as they relate to program instructors, common questions and answers about literacy and literacy education techniques, and a one-page list of useful references. The test is designed to assess both literacy readiness and actual reading and writing skills. It is to be administered every 10 weeks during the program to monitor progress and readiness for the next level of instruction. The curriculum guide presents basic objectives and specific instructions for the presentation of course material to students, with supplementary information about applicable teaching techniques. Appended materials include seven sections containing tips for the teacher on Spanish grammar and common vocabulary, and reproducible materials for classroom pre-reading and pre-writing activities, handwriting instruction, Spanish literacy instruction, English literacy instruction, mathematics instruction, and dual literacy.
