Abstract | The purpose of this book is to revitalize teaching and learning about the U.S. Constitution for elementary and secondary school students. Fifty-one classroom teachers participated in the Special Programs in Citizenship Education (SPICE II), a project that focused on the development of new lesson plans and activities on the Constitution. These lesson plans are reproduced in this book in units that explore: (1) constitutional issues in U.S. history; (2) contemporary constitutional/legal issues; (3) constitutional issues in school settings; and (4) approaches to teaching about the U.S. Constitution. A table cross-references the lessons by subject areas and grade levels. Each lesson plan includes: (1) an introduction; (2) the suggested audience; (3) time requirements; (4) goals; (5) materials needed; (6) procedures; (7) evaluation suggestions; (8) resource material suggestions; and (9) a bibliography. Some lesson plans include student handouts. (JHP) |
