Abstract | This strategic plan is a synthesis of a number of previous studies on computers in the schools of Alberta, Canada, as well as an assessment of the current situation in the schools, and a recognition of today's difficult fiscal climate. The topics covered include the rationale for integrating microcomputers into school programs; risks and constraints involved in computer use; uses of computers in Alberta's schools in the past and the current situation; strategic planning; educational software; curriculum and learning resources; teacher knowledge and development; computer hardware, networking, and facilities; planning and research; and funding. A concluding statement suggests that a redefinition of what computers should do in education and the gathering together of the necessary components--hardware, software, and teacher knowledge--be carried out to ensure an optimal return on the substantial investment in computers. A summary of departmental direction and actions for the near future concludes the report, and four appendixes provide additional materials from prior reports and conferences. (CGD) |
