| Abstract | Designed as an aid for those investigating the possibility of opening their first business, as well as business owners with many years experience who have never prepared a written business plan, this workbook guides the reader through the steps involved in the preparation of a business plan or feasibility study. After a general discussion of the importance of planning and a personal evaluation form, the workbook provides sections on goal setting, establishing the purpose of the business, determining background information on the relevant industry and the role of small businesses within that industry, and deciding the most appropriate form of doing business (e.g., sole proprietorship or limited partnership). The next sections list steps and ask questions related to the following business aspects: management, personnel, products/services, customers, and location. Next, the workbook reviews the steps in conducting a competitive analysis and developing a marketing strategy. The next sections deal with financial issues, including preparing a personal financial statement, sales forecasting, determining the cost of goods sold, calculating labor-related and nonlabor operating expenses, planning purchases of capital equipment, estimating start-up expenses, projecting income and cash flow, deciding upon sources and uses of financing, preparing balance sheets and break-even analyses, and setting up a timetable.
