Abstract | The goals and program orientations of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Directorate for Science and Engineering Education are summarized in this publication. A listing is given of the projects supported by the Directorate in fiscal years 1983, 1984, and 1985. This compilation includes the name and location of the institution, the project director's name and department, the award amound and the grant number. Summaries are provided of the responsibilities, priorities, and accomplishments of each of the Directorate's major operating units. These divisions focus on: (1) materials development, research, and informal education (supporting projects which provide improvement model and materials, address recreational learning and expand the teaching knowledge base); (2) teacher preparation and enhancement (offering support for science and mathematics education networks, for excellence in teaching, and for teacher preparation and enhancement programs); (3) program assessment (providing data on the status of K-12 education in science, mathematics, and technology); (4) college science instrumentation (emphasizing undergraduate improvement projects); and (5) research career development (promoting career development for graduate students, young postdoctoral students, and junior faculty).
