| Abstract | A national survey examined the opinions of aircraft maintenance training school administrators and instructors concerning the suitability of Federal Aviation Regulation Part 147 (FAR 147) to regulate effectively today's training programs. Responding to the mail survey instrument were 163 persons representing 90 schools in 37 states. Included among the major views expressed by the respondents were the following: (1) instructors should be required to update their curriculum every 5 years and should operate under the inspection of the local General Aviation District Office; (2) the certification system should be modified to recognize rotary wing, avionics, and other specialists; (3) stricter certification procedures are necessary for aviation maintenance trainers, including minimum on-the-job experience and formal instruction on principles of educational techniques; (4) current written tests are inadequate and are compromised by the publication of tests and answers; (5) while most portions of the present curriculum are acceptable, certain subject areas are in need of content increase and other areas are in need of content decrease; and (6) the Federal Aviation Administration should conduct a comprehensive curriculum evaluation.
