Abstract | As part of a series on career and life planning for adults, this four-part booklet examines factors that affect job satisfaction and success. After introductory material noting today's tight job market, Part I lists the qualities employers want employees to have and then discusses: (1) job survival tactics, such as remaining knowledgeable of the company; (2) internal blocks to job satisfaction and success, such as absenteeism, lack of initiative, or a mismatch between personal work style and the company's work environment; (3) external blocks, such as company politics, over which the employee has no control; and (4) problems of coping after being laid off. Next, Part II considers job revitalization and includes an article by Carol Krucoff on methods of coping with job burnout, a questionnaire designed to measure the employee's degree of burnout, and a set of revitalization questions which requires the reader to evaluate his/her current job satisfaction, describe his/her "dream" job, and determine how the characteristics of the "dream" job can be realistically integrated into his/her work environment. Finally, exercises in Part III help the reader to consider the options available to persons suffering from job-related stress and in Part IV to develop an action plan for change. Appended are a 27-item bibliography and two articles dealing with burnout and career change. (JP/KL) |
