AbstractThe test described here is a particular type of diagnostic test; it is part of a series of tests designed to explore systematically areas of potential lexical difficulty in the English language for French-speaking students of English. The lexical units are considered under their formal, morphological, syntactic and semantic aspects. The test has two parts: (1) comprehension of lexical units presented in context, and (2) recognition of the same lexical units presented with two distractors that are phonologically close to the original. Because the test was oriented towards finding obstacles to learning, the answers were examined according to the number of errors per item. The results were regrouped in function of: (1) contrastive degree, (2) presence or absence of minimal pairs, (3) number of syllables, and (4) position in the intonation group of the unit under discussion. The results are described and evaluated in terms of these four criteria. Appendices include the tests and tables of the results. (AMH)
