| Abstract | This treatise emphasizes a pedagogical approach to second language pronunciation instruction that is based on a knowledge of the mechanics of vocal production as well as on certain psycholinguistic phenomena and the influence of orthography. A general discussion of pronunciation covers the relationship of language and speech, motives for learning correct pronunciation, ear training, performance training, and phonetic notation. A section is devoted to teaching speakers of English to pronounce other languages, and another to teaching speakers of other languages to pronounce English. Each of these sections discusses facial movement, management of the breath, activity at the larynx, tongue activity, and the influence of English spelling conventions. An inventory of mispronunciations is included in each section. In addition, the section on English as a second language discusses the relative pedagogic merits of the different varieties of English. Appendices include a diagram of the organs of speech, vowel figures showing English and non-English vowels, and tables of phonetic symbols occurring in the text and of vowel notations for English.
