Abstract	This textbook, prepared for a course entitled The Planning of Higher Education: The Private Demand, and offered by the Open University of Great Britain, is divided into four sections. In Section I the course is introduced and summaries of the various units are presented. In Section II, Forecasting the Private Demand for Education, definitions of relevant terms are provided, and demographic projections are discussed in general and for the United Kingdom. The concept of private demand for post-compulsory education is examined with special reference to the Robbins Committee methods of estimating future student numbers. Section III, Factors Influencing the Demand for Higher Education, examines such topics as income, personal preferences, age, and social class and their influence on the private demand for postsecondary education. A "demand function" for calculations is also explained. In Section IV, The Individual's Private Investment in Education, the private costs of higher education and the expected monetary returns from education are examined. Several self-assessment questions are included for the student as well as a list of recommended readings and a course outline. (SF)
