| Abstract | Manpower forecasts, available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Census Bureau, and the National Center for Education Statistics, indicate that from 1970 to 1990 there will be significant major shifts in the number of Americans in the prime-age group of 25-44 years of age. This huge prime-age labor force suggests that there will be fierce competition for promotions coupled with career disappointments for many, and that competition for movement up the organizational ladder will be further-sharpened by secondary effects of anti-dsicrimination laws. Implications of these projections for the student services labor market reveal that: (1) declines in the number of 18-21 year olds will affect the labor market conditions negatively or, at best, cause a "no growth" situation; (2) laid-off or retrenched personnel will re-enter the labor market and further intensify an already-competitive situation; and (3) job mobility will continue to decline over the next decade.
