Abstract	This guide presents a system for determining the qender of French nouns that has been tested against 12,000 pages of general reading: novels, history, social science, law, finance, and the Bible. The guide discusses the rules for determining gender and also presents various lists of the non-routine or exceptions to the rules. It is asserted that French nouns fit into 20 patterns that cut the gender-memory effort by at least 90-92%; the system's underlying principle is "management by exception": using patterns to isolate the non-routine nouns for special attention. The guide is organized into three "phases" of increasing difficulty or complexity: phase I discusses non-mute (-e) nouns, natural persons (individuals), general mute (-e) nouns, and mixed-consonant mute (-e) nouns; phase II covers nouns from adjectives, ellipsis, (-que) nouns, chemical elements and compounds; and phase III includes gender profiles, notes for further study and an advanced list of exceptions for businessmen, and the "why and how" of the mute (-e) masculines.
