AbstractThe monograph assesses the state of legal education as provided in law schools in the United States today. Positive aspects of legal education include technical proficiency, superb law faculties, good law students, and excellent facilities and libraries. The most striking negative aspect of legal education is its resistance to change. This resistance can be illustrated by the following examples: (1) rejection of efforts to infuse the study of law with information from the social sciences and humanities; (2) failure to utilize modern teaching methods such as problem solving, research seminars, clinical training, and simulation; (3) acquiescence to contemporary legal morality; (4) reinforcement of recruitment practices in law firms and law schools which discriminate against women and minority group members; and (5) failure to make major changes in the law school curriculum since 1870. The conclusion is that law schools should become more responsive to political and social morality. Recommendations for achieving this objective include preparing law students to become dispensers of justice and modernizing legal education so that it is responsive to contemporary social needs. (DB)
