AbstractIn response to the Pennsylvania State Board of Education's request that the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Universities (PACU) and the Pennsylvania Association of Private School Administrators recommend solutions to the problem of unnecessary duplication of academic programs, a one year inventory of postsecondary degree programs in the state was undertaken. The report, directed to the general public, reviews the historical context and current conditions, such as increasing costs and demands for accountability for funds, that prompted the request. A summary of the study, which sought to develop a systematic data base describing the state's degree programs in terms of need, availability, and supply is presented, along with conclusions, recommendations, and PACU policy statements. The findings include data on the number, level (associate, baccalaureate, etc.), and distribution of programs. The conclusions advise that student demand, resource availability, and manpower need be considered when judging program duplication, and that the decision is best made at the local level. The recommendations include a request that the data base be used in institutional planning, and that the development of master plans be encouraged. The PACU policy statements call for maintenance of the data base for future planning, and improvement of the current study processes. (JMD)
