AbstractSpecific objectives of a cooperative university-industry occupational internship program were to (1) develop an assessment system to identify the competencies possessed and needed by individuals in the target population; (2) develop the guidelines, procedures, and necessary software for conducting a departmental cooperative university-industry occupational internship program; (3) prepare local school vocational agriculture teachers as coordinators to assist in the supervision of students placed on internships; and (4) identify agricultural businesses and personnel capable and willing to provide internship learning experiences for undergraduate students and teachers of vocational agriculture. Thirty-two currently employed teachers of vocational agriculture became instructor-coordinators and assisted in the placement and supervision of the fifty-two undergraduate students completing internships, which included involving the students in local school and community agriculture activities. Fifteen currently employed teachers of vocational agriculture also completed internships. The program's success prompted eleven recommendations which included permanently establishing a university-industry occupational internship program. (Three-fourths of the report is comprised of an appendix which includes a self-assessment inventory covering eight agricultural occupation areas for use by interns for determining proficiency in the area in which certification is desired.)
