| Abstract | This pronunciation manual for the study of English as a foreign/second language can be used with beginning as well as intermediate or advanced students. The text is organized in three parts or cycles. Part One is an introduction to selected features of pitch and stress and an inventory of the vowels and consonants, with contextual illustrations of contrasts that have proved generally to be problems. It includes the following chapters: (1) "Elements of Intonation"; (2) "The English Vowel System"; and (3) "The English Consonants." Part Two presents some of the patterns commonly associated with combinations of features of intonation, vowels, and consonants, including the effects of vowels and consonants. It includes the following chapters: (4) "English Stress and Intonation Patterns"; (5) "English Vowel Patterns"; and (6) "English Consonant Patterns." Part Three recycles the same sequence on the construct level, with chapter 7 devoted to suprasegmental and chapter 8 to segmental constructions. Chapter 9 offers assorted exercises in which a synthesis of features and patterns is attempted in more complex environments and constructions. (Author/CFM) |
