AbstractThis paper examines the problems of dispelling mistaken concepts about a country, or de-mythologizing students' ideas about a country's daily life, in foreign language instruction. Some conclusions about teaching culture are offered, and the teaching experiences which led to those conclusions are related. It is felt that much teaching about the daily life in another country allows students to develop concepts that don't correspond to reality. Myths grow up when certain aspects of culture are unjustifiably glorified or denigrated, or when generalizations are not based on factual information. Cross-cultural perspective is difficult to develop. As aspects of the target country are presented, students should be informed about equivalent aspects of the United States and neighboring countries, since sound cross-cultural perspective based on factual information de-mythologizes student's concepts of the target culture. A mini-course entitled "France Today" was the source of these ideas. A description of the slides used with classroom discussions is provided, as well as student reactions to the course format. A short list of resource materials useful for teaching culture concludes the paper. (CLK)
