Abstract | In his introduction to the course, Issues in Economic Geography, the author surveys the profession of geography, reviewing its history and its function in today's society and making recommendations for a "rethinking" of geography. He states that positivism, the search for emperically verifiable knowledge that makes an objective science of some aspects of human behavior and human affect upon the landscape, dominates geography but that an alternative, antiestablishment perspective is possible. Antiestablishment geographers believe that geography should be concerned with the human condition and include among its purposes the enlightment of the public and of policy makers. This new base for the discipline would consider equity in resource distribution, the responsiveness of various institutions to human needs, community development, and the harmony of man in his total environment. The argument for a humanistic rather than mechanistic science is posited against a view of a geographical establishment which exists to perpetuate itself. Only the instruction is available in this document. The remainder of the two semester course, including an abundance of copyrighted material, proceeds from the vantage point of the introduction to cover four "issues," beginning with imperialism and four "landscapes," studies of Sweden, Yugoslavia, the Soviet Union, and China.
