Abstract | Liberals have been largely successful in accomplishing their goal of equalizing educational opportunity through the use of federal powers, but it is now quite clear that this achievement has in no way brought about the expected increase in domestic tranquility. Indeed, the relationship between them seems to be the reverse of those great expectations. Education, by being linked to the economy, while lacking commensurate power to shape industrial activities, is not capable of fulfilling its goals for changing the society. Moreover, by focusing on the external needs of the social order, it has ignored at great cost its own province of the mind. (Author) |
