Abstract	Journalism is a profession, and the academic preparation for it whould be emulative of professional schools such as medicine and law rather than of liberal arts colleges. The purpose of education for journalism should be to produce the best possible newsgatherers, that is, reporters. In addition to preparing students in the basics of journalism, the journalism curriculum should take cognizance of the social sciences with the objective of correlating the instruction in the social sciences with journalism courses. The journalism student should be taught to conduct secondary and primary research, making limited use of the hypothesis approach. Teachers and students should become better acquainted through reduced class sizes, allowing closer attention to individual student's needs; and curriculum designers should increase the number of journalism courses while reducing liberal arts requirements. (Teaching techniques aimed at developing the skills and qualities necessary to produce first-rate reporting are included). (RB)
