Abstract | The purpose of this study was to survey the emerging environmental educational programs in the elementary and secondary schools which focus on the aesthetics of the urban environmental as the total function of city design and its consequences upon the student as inhabitant and perceiver. A group of urban experts was chosen to formulate a consensus and establish criteria for evaluating the urban aesthetics curricula. Urban environmental curricula, including pilot projects and innovative programs, were analyzed using the criteria developed by the urban experts and techniques of descriptive research. The curricula were examined for their philosophical principles, assumptions, hypotheses, goals, attitudes, concepts, and values expressed. The findings indicated that there is a gap between what is now being taught and the ideal curricula suggested by the writing of experts. Exemplary programs on the high school and elementary level demonstrated the credibility of the placement in the curriculum of these programs of urban aesthetics. (Author/WR) |
