| Abstract | To develop and test preretirement educational materials and methods for hourly rated workers and to determine the immediate effects of participation by these workers and their wives in a group discussion preretirement education program, a study was undertaken with 88 automobile workers (aged 60 or more) and 54 wives as volunteers. Six types of materials were used for group study: essays, case histories, a retirement checklist, short films, still pictures, and a discussion leader's manual. After 17 measures of change among experimental and control workers, the discussion program did not seem to have changed workers' attitudes toward life in general, retirement, health, or income, but it encouraged participants to take preparatory retirement steps. Wives in the experimental group completed the program with significantly more favorable scores on health self-appraisal and retirement income, while wives in the control group had a higher score on present income attitudes. Married participants and those with incomes over $7000 achieved higher mean change scores on indexes measuring self satisfaction and retirement attitudes. (Appendixes include tables and 17 indexes.
