Abstract	"The chapter presents an overview of sport in the Polish third sector, focusing on the impact of historical and political changes on today's sport organizations. While in other countries sport had a mostly educational role, it seems that in Poland it was always strongly connected with politics, at one time as a part of a patriotic movement and later as a tool of propaganda. Nowadays, sport organizations constitute the biggest part of the Polish third sector and are one of the most important spheres of social activity on the local level. They still have an important educational role, which is now connected with the promotion of a healthy lifestyle rather than values. The structure of the sport sector in Poland is dualistic, with a large number of small local sport clubs and strong centralized structures on the national level. The latter are often controversial, due to the links with politics and in some cases unlawful practices connected with sport betting." (author's abstract).
