Abstract | Multiculturality is one of the characteristics of modern (or postmodern) societies. How to deal with the presence of a multitude of cultures or civilizations within a given society poses a great challenge. The basic concepts and terms of educational theory and research, such as "education", "instruction", and even "socialization", do not refer to the condition of multiculturality. Major terms in the field of education have been developed historically within the boundaries of one culture only and can thus be characterized as "intracultural" in content and scope. The author argues that a basic term referring explicitly to the intercultural condition of our time is missing. He suggests the broadening of the terminological base of education by appropriating the anthropological concept of "acculturation". (DIPF/Orig.). |
