AbstractIn the reported longitudinal study, the authors scrutinize changes in the speech of elderly persons. The data consists of recordings of three prominent politicans, each recorded while middle aged and in the old age. The study is based on three hypotheses which are derived from results of contemporary research. First, the authors expect the speed of speech to be slower in old age than in middle age; second, more disfluencies should occur; third, the syntactic complexity of the utterances should be lower in old age than in middle age. The authors were able to prove the first hypothesis for two of the individuals, however, not for the third. They were able to prove the second hypothesis for only one individual with impressive explicitness; for the second of the three individuals analyzed, the span between points of measurement was very small; in the case of the third individual, even fewer disfluencies occured in older age. The results regarding the third hypothesis have also not been completely unambiguous. Nonetheless, all observed individuals showed a change in the ratio between main clauses and subordinate clauses, at the expense of subordinate clauses. In two of the cases the change was strong. Also, the authors detected a strong decrease of embedded subordinate clauses for all three individuals. Considering these two findings, they regard the third hypothesis as confirmed.
