Abstract | The article presents the financing of adult education in the wider framework, describing the traditional relation between government and education and the present feature of governmental action. Financing is one of the mandates of the State, arising from its "public responsibility" for the system of education in general and in particular for adult and continuing education. Objectives and motives of financing are being connected with the legal structure of the adult education system by Laws on Adult education and on vocational training. The financing of adult education institutions by public budgeting and by co-financing mechanisms is placed in the centre of the article. Different modes of financing as well as the legal structure for the provision of education at all levels are indicating problems and tendencies of developing adult education as a fourth pillar of the educational system. Finally, the recommendations of the "Commission on Financing Lifelong Learning" are interpreted as a chance for new conceptions and perspectives of the vocational and the general component of adult education.
