Abstract | Hiram College (Queens University of Charlotte, N.C.) has the most students in the USA who are studying abroad. It has continuous international study programs which are offered as Extra Mural Studies in the students' host countries and on campus at home. "A question remains about the impact of study abroad programs when compared to similar study on campus. ... Two extended case studies of curriculum focused on Central America and Israel are examined to answer this research question." Using a questionnaire, "31 excellent students who studied off campus in Central America and Mexico ... were matched with 55 comparable students who completed the course on campus." Similarly, 12 students who travelled to Israel were compared to students who completed courses about Jewish / Palestinian history on campus. The results were that there are significant differences in outcomes between the on- and off-campus groups concerning affective, cognitive and behavioural outcomes. (DIPF/Bi.) |
