Abstract	This chapter describes some of the principal features of educational changes in the OECD countries and relates them, first to the internal characteristics of each country and then to some indicators of these countries' positions in the global economy... [Conclusion:] Educational reforms had, until the mid-1980's, been conditioned by internal factors such as the relationship between church and state, religious and cultural composition of the country, type of state... Once global competition became a reality, many countries were forced to be economically competitive in a global context, and the neo-Liberal discourse attained a hegemonic position. With the economic recession, the emergence of new movements and the Neo-liberal paradigm, many OECD countries restructured their educational systems to an extent that cannot be understood primarily in terms of internal, national factors.
