Abstract	The essay gives an overview of the transformation taking place in Central and Eastern European education. [The authors] include a period of time from perestroika until the end of the 1990s with a main focus on Russian education. [Even if] Russia doesn't represent Central and Eastern Europe it seems to be the most significant and dramatic case. The essay is structured as follows: 1. Perestroika and the transition to post-communism; 2. Implementation of educational laws in the newly independent states; 3. From the Soviet school to national school systems; 4.
