Abstract | The article is an attempt to elucidate a "gender bias" in the national curriculum assessment system for 14-year-olds in England. The authors argue that the tiered levels of entry used in the assessment have an adverse impact on self-esteem and students' views of future achievement, particularly for girls in mathematic and sciences. More attention should be paid to students' views of themselves and to unintended effects of assessment on girls' disaffection in relation to these subjects. (DIPF/Orig.) |
