Abstract | Traditionally, educational institutions have relied heavily on the use of tables and graphs to analyze and present enrollment data. However, in dealing with information that has a spatial component (such as enrollment data), graphs and tables are often insufficient for communicating the spatial dimension. An effective way to add this extra dimension to the analysis is through maps, since many spatial patterns are easier to identify and understand. This chapter demonstrates how maps can be used to visualize and analyze student enrollment. All of the examples come from the experience accumulated through several years of working in the application of geographic information system (GIS) techniques to analysis of student enrollment at a major university.
