Abstract	Service learning is one of the most effective teaching methods for engaging and retaining community college students, but it comes with its challenges. For many students, the added requirements of a service learning experience can become one more responsibility in an already too-long list. In addition to being responsible for children, holding down one or several jobs, coordinating schedules with a spouse or significant other, and trying to make it all work with very little finances, fitting work with a community partner into the mix can be daunting. The non-residential aspect of community college often makes it hard for students to feel a part of the college's student community. While some students seek out involvement and connection through clubs, work-study and student government, at Portland Community College (PCC), the aim is to reach the rest of the students. To reap the benefits of this engaging educational practice, PCC has turned service learning on its side in a variety of classes. Instead of going out to serve the community in all of our projects, PCC brought some of them on campus. They have incorporated assignments that serve the needs within the school, as well as incorporating activities that serve the larger community from the campuses. (ERIC).
