Abstract | The purpose of the current basic qualitative study was to understand unethical behaviors from the perspective of the nurse educators' experiences with unethical behaviors, i.e., plagiarism, cheating on exams and assignments, misrepresentation, and incivility. Twelve female participants answered a series of interview questions that specifically addressed personal experiences with the four types of unethical behaviors. The nurse educators' responses to the interview questions were analyzed thematically to identify three major themes and 11 sub-themes. The major themes included (a) experiences with occurrences, (b) experiences related to moral agency and behavioral management, and (c) implications and effects on teacher-student relationships. The study further disclosed two issues. First, unethical behaviors such as cheating, plagiarism, misrepresentation, and incivility by nursing students had a short-term effect on the teacher-student relationship. Second, institutions must find ways to manage unethical behaviors by first setting boundaries, and employing stricter punitive measures for incivility and misrepresentation, especially in the clinical setting. The current study presented several recommendations for future research related to unethical behaviors in nursing education. This research was presented to the faculty as a partial requirement for the completion of the Doctorate in Nursing Education at Capella University.
