AbstractThis 60-minute VHS videotape of a U.S. Department of Education Satellite Town Meeting focuses on the future of learning in U.S. schools and what it will take to create challenging, exciting, high performing schools. It explains that there cannot be excellent learning without excellent teaching. The 1985 National Teacher of the Year co-hosts this video along with the Principal-in-Residence, U.S. Department of Education. Guests panelists include teachers and administrators from schools and districts nationwide who have already created this vision for education in their own schools. Discussion focuses on such issues as: what is different about the teaching and learning in outstanding schools; a change in focus from inputs to outcomes; the importance of high quality teachers; using technology in education; the need for teachers to have high expectations for students; good communication with and participation of parents; the importance of bringing academic standards alive to the entire school community; creating a community of learners; the importance of the entire school community believing that all students can succeed; and ongoing professional development for teachers. Examples from various schools are presented. (SM)
